SMALL-TOWN BAREILLY HITS HIGH IN GLAMOUR WORLD

MISS World 2000 Priyanka Chopra was quite the local heroine
of Bareilly before the International contest happened to her.
With a US-returned tag, and blow-ups of her portfolio
splashed all over the snazziest photo studio in town,
Bareilly Club's May Queen 1999 was biggish news,
spawing a rash of pre-pubescent imitators and schoolboy
crushes with her 'local belle' status.

While it's hard to quantify just how much Bareilly- a prototype of small-town India- with its(approx.) seven lakh population, single arterial street, tracky little gyms that have cropped up in the past year and seamy beauty parlours shuttered with posters of cine stars, has contributed to the making of a beauty queen, the town is basking in the Swarovski-crused, reflected glory of the crown perched atop "haman" Priyanka's seventeen year old head.

Bareilly present enough opportunities to feed anyone's beauty fancies, Priyanka, with her four years of education in the USA(her parents sent her to get an "all-round perspective"), may have come back to Bareilly with an acquired dresssense , accent and a dream.

At 17, she knew how to apply the right make -up, ate enough to subsist, and trekked down to the Capital with her gynaecologist mother routinely for facial and hair treatment at the Shahnaz Hussain clinic.

But it was in Bareilly that Priyanka, student of class XII, got her photo shoot done and her first taste of beauty queen-dom with the May Queen title. Says photographer Rajiv Suri, of Suri Foto Lab, who taught Priyanka to "pose". "there has been a big increase in the number of young girls coming in to get their fashion portfolios done. While many of the photographs are sent to prospective grooms, who want to see their brides-to-be in a variety of outfits, some do come in with a desire model."
