Different colours have a different effect on people. The seven basic colours of the rainbow each have their individual properties. Knowing a bit more about their different properties can help us know which colours will work best for us and incorporate this knowledge in our day to day life to gain benefits.

How colours influence us -- Shades of meaning 


Given below are the main properties of the seven colours of the Spectrum and a few other colours derived from them:

Violet: This is the colour found at the end of the visible spectrum. It is a very powerful colour and is associated with creativity, inspiration and beauty and is believed to be the favourite of many famous composers and artists.

What is important is that one should be able to harness and channelise the creativity it brings, or else it could prove too strong and negative for some people. It also has the ability to reduce appetite in compulsive eaters. It is not advised that depressed people use much of this colour.

Indigo: It is the colour of intuition, mysticism and spirituality. It is useful for diseases of the eyes, nose, ears and also sinusitis. It increases dream activity. However, too much of this colour can make you drowsy and heavy-headed.

Blue: This is a cooling colour that brings about peace, harmony and understanding. Helps soothe the nerves and mind and is good for burns too. Too much though will leave you feeling low and depressed. Avoid this colour if you have poor circulation.

Green: This is the colour of balance and healing. It is beneficial for the heart region. Helps to balance emotions and promotes growth. It is seen to be effective in the regeneration and healing of bones and tissues.

Yellow: This is the colour of intellect and helps in mental stimulation. It increases the ability to perceive and understand things better. Is also beneficial in curing skin ailments. However if it is used in excess, it can cause exhaustion due to its stimulative powers.

Orange: This is an energising colour, which fills us with energy. It helps to increase immunity and is effective in ailments of the digestive tract, kidney and chest. Also helps one to be independent and social. Since it is an energising colour, too much is not good for easily agitated people.

Red: Like orange, this is also an energising colour, warm and associated and with the physical body. It helps to warm cold areas, reduce pain and help counter-act depression. People with high blood pressure should avoid wearing too much of this colour. Excess can also cause agitation in certain people.

Silver: This is the colour of peace and persistence. It helps remove impurities and diseases from the body.

Gold: This colour has the highest ability to cure all ailments of the body and mind but it can prove too strong for people not accustomed to wearing the colour.

Pink: This colour has the attributes of red in a toned down form.

Brown: The earth colour is associated with stability. It helps us to be practical but too much makes a person feel uninspired as well.

White: The colour of purity, this colour purifies the body and brings about relief from pain.

Black: This colour absorbs all other colours and is associated with negativity. A person using too much of it indicates a need for emotional support.

Grey: This colour is obtained by mixing black and white and is also considered a negative colour depending on the shade of grey. It is the colour associated with stress and fatigue. Its effects can be toned down considerably by mixing it with some stronger colour like yellow or red.
